Dear Students and Members of the School of Engineering
of the University of Minho:
The 36th anniversary of the School of Engineering
of the University of Minho (EEUM) will be celebrated during the School Week
which will take place in October.
Bearing in mind the success of previous years, the
EEUM will edit abstracts and papers of topics from on-going doctoral courses
which are in a research stage. With this renewed initiative we will enlighten
not only the community of the University of Minho, but also the scientific
community in general, about the areas covered by our researchers.
All PhD students enrolled in the 2nd and subsequent
years in 2010/2011 were challenged to prepare extended abstracts. The Heads of
the research centres selected PhD students who are in advanced stage in their
theses for the publication of a complete article which must be related to the
theme of the 2011 school Week, "A School Reinventing the Future".
The annual selection of themes aims at encouraging
emerging research areas, at rewarding areas with high quality indicators, as
well as at identifying priority areas. Thus, the EEUM will give the following
awards: i. to the best Paper (among a selection of full papers published); ii.
to the best Poster (among a selection of extended abstracts published); iii. To
the best PhD Thesis; iv. to the best MSc Dissertation of 2nd cycle
or Integrated MSc.
At present the EEUM has a universe of about 6053
students, 676 of whom are in the 3rd cycle, about 815 in 2nd
cycle or Integrated MSc. In 2010/2011, the EEUM graduated more than 530 1st
cycle and 2nd cycle and Integrated MSc students and more than 50
doctors.
Interaction with society, namely through PhD students
who develop their PhD theses in enterprises, PhD theses and MSc dissertations
in collaboration with the public-private sectors and the development of
half-yearly curricular projects in enterprise, is intense and it continues to
expand. Proof of this are the external Institutions and partner enterprises
which co-operate with us in large projects submitted to QREN, the FCT and EC
programmes in general. This interaction is also reflected in financial terms through
numerous protocols with institutions and enterprises that either receive
transfer of technology and knowledge or require provision of services.
The strategic plan of the EEUM, developed throughout
this year, seeks to highlight a School of Engineering of excellence with
distinctive projects, assuming internationalisation, research and education of
quality as key factors to achieve its ultimate goal: a school for society which
is essential to promoting quality of life. Some of the strategic actions adopted
in the strategic plan are already in force. Hence the EEUM walks on a
sustainable basis to achieve the goals pointed out in the 2020 Agenda.
The School of Engineering of the University of Minho
continues to focus on strengthening its dynamic role and the role played by its
graduates, MSc´s and PhD´s in relation to society by supporting the national
industry and services and by promoting sustainable development seeking to
improve the quality of life of all of us.
Academic Greetings,
The Dean of the School of Engineering of
the University of Minho
Paulo Pereira
